چکیده

Aim Phylogeography provides a framework to explain and integrate patterns of marine biodiversity at infraand supra-specific levels. As originally expounded, the phylogeographic hypotheses are generalities that have limited discriminatory power; the goal of this study is to generate and test specific instances of the hypotheses, thereby better elucidating both local patterns of evolution and the conditions under which the generalities do or do not apply.

Morphologic and molecular redescription of Catostylus mosaicus conservativus (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomeae: Catostylidae) from south-east Australia

Catostylus mosaicus (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) is a rhizostome jellyfish endemic to eastern Australia. Originally described from Port Jackson (Sydney) in New South Wales (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824), the species is thought to range from Port Phillip (Melbourne) in Victoria to the Torres Strait (Kramp, 1965; Southcott, 1982), i.e. across three biogeographic boundaries. Given recent reports of multiple cry...

Evolutionary relationships among scyphozoan jellyfish families based on complete taxon sampling and phylogenetic analyses of 18S and 28S ribosomal DNA.

A stable phylogenetic hypothesis for families within jellyfish class Scyphozoa has been elusive. Reasons for the lack of resolution of scyphozoan familial relationships include a dearth of morphological characters that reliably distinguish taxa and incomplete taxonomic sampling in molecular studies. Here, we address the latter issue by using maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods to reconstruc...

Global phylogeography of Cassiopea (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomeae): molecular evidence for cryptic species and multiple invasions of the Hawaiian Islands

The upside-down jellyfish Cassiopea is a globally distributed, semi-sessile, planktonically dispersed scyphomedusa. Cassiopea occurs in shallow, tropical inshore marine waters on sandy mudflats and is generally associated with mangrove-dominated habitats. Controversy over the taxonomy of upside-down jellyfishes precedes their introduction to the Hawaiian Islands during the Second World War, and...

A modern description of Crambionella stuhlmanni (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomeae) from St Lucia Estuary, South Africa

A new record of Crambionella stuhlmanni is reported from the east coast of South Africa. The material is described using quantitative morphological data, and mitochondrial (CO1) and nuclear (ITS-1) sequence data. The species can be diagnosed by a combination of morphological features including the presence of conical projections on velar lappets, the absence of orbicular appendages among mouthl...

Extraction and Purification of Collagen from the Jellyfish Catostylus mosaicus of the Persian Gulf

Background: Collagen is a protein that constitutes a major component of connective tissue and has many applications in the medical and non-medical fields. The increase in the world population and the need for proteins have led to a special focus on seafood. Furthermore, jellyfish is a rich and renewable source of collagen. Therefore, many researchers have shown interest in collagen extraction f...
